Manx Care is on a par with the most advanced Urology centres in the UK and worldwide

Manx Care is now on a par with the most advanced Urology centres in the UK and worldwide, thanks to Mannin Cancers Support Group’s generous donation of a Trans Perineal Prostate Biopsy USS/MRI Fusion Machine.

The state of the art machine will have a significant impact the quality of services provided to prostate cancer patients, allowing the team to pinpoint cancerous lesions, therefore making it easier to locate the site from which to take a biopsy.

This has been made possible due to a generous donation by the Mannin Cancers Support Group. In addition, the Tevir Group have very kindly sponsored three years of maintenance on the equipment.

The machine was tested and formal training was delivered before an inauguration ceremony last week at Noble’s Hospital, and the service began on 03 July 2024. It is already working well, and it is expected that over 200 patients a year will benefit from this development.

Baher Hussein, Consultant Urologist for Manx Care, said: “We cannot express how grateful we are for the continuous support of Mannin Cancers Support Group and the Tevir Group, as well as all those who have supported this endeavour – the machine is working like a dream and a huge number of patients will benefit in the years to come. We are proud to be in the same league as the most advanced Urology centres – this is a huge accomplishment for Manx Care.”

Julie Stokes, Chairman of Mannin Cancers Support Group, added “We would like to thank everyone who’s made being able to purchase this fabulous piece of equipment possible. The cost of this equipment was just under £180,000, which would not have been possible without the help of the Tevir Group who have funded three years’ maintenance costs.

Having this equipment on Island will save many patients from having to travel to the UK for the diagnosis and staging of Prostate Cancer. It will benefit over 200 patients every year on our Island. Thanks to Mr Baher Hussein (Consultant Urologist), his team and Manx Care for all their help.”
